Episode 1: Esteban, Child of the Sun

This episode starts the series in rainy Barcelona, Spain in the year of 1532. Young Esteban leaves the cathedral and runs to a tavern where he hides behind some barrels and listens to sailors' stories of the Seven Cities of Gold and a voyage to discover the cities in the New World. Eventually, some men from the church come looking for Esteban (as his presence is needed for a festival in the city) and the people in the tavern go out into the streets to find him. One man doesn't leave the tavern, however, because he knows Esteban is in the tavern. That man is Mendoza.

Eventually, Esteban is captured and brought to the harbor where he appears to miraculously stop the rain and summon the sun. Shortly thereafter, Father Rodriguez, Esteban's guardian, dies, but not before asking Esteban to bring his gift to the new world. He also reveals the story of Esteban's father:

On Magellen's voyage, there was a great storm and Esteban's father died, but Esteban was rescued by a brave sailor.

After the death of Father Rodriguez, Mendoza reveals himself to be the man that saved Esteban from the shipwreck that killed his father - he also reveals that Esteban's father may be alive... in the New World. Finally, as proof, Mendoza shows that he possesses a section of a golden medallion that fits into a medallion that Esteban has worn all of his life.

At the end of the episode, Esteban has agreed to go to the New World with Mendoza. Who knows what adventure awaits us. Maybe we'll see Sailfish.

This is the newest and greatest blog about The Mysterious Cities of Gold.

This evening, I gathered with my friends Greg, Jordan, and Kevin and we stumbled upon the complete The Mysterious Cities of Gold. We watched the first episode and have formed the New Hampshire Mysterious Cities of Gold club, watching all of the 38 remaining episodes of The Mysterious Cities of Gold over the next many weeks. Appearing on this blog will be constant updates and features about the episodes we are watching and our plans relating to The Mysterious Cities of Gold.
